What to Expect When Buying a Goat

Buying a goat comes with a few basic responsibilities, and we make sure new owners know what to expect. We discuss fencing, shelter, feed, minerals, and why goats must live with other goats for their well-being. We also let buyers know when goats will be ready for pickup and what paperwork or health information comes with them. Clear expectations help ensure a smooth transition for both the goat and its new family.

Meet the Goats Who Sometimes Forget to Stay Upright

Fainting goats, also called Tennessee Myotonic Goats, are a heritage breed known for their laid-back nature and the unique genetic trait that causes their muscles to stiffen for a moment when they’re startled. The “faint” doesn’t hurt them—it’s simply how the breed responds, and most goats recover in just a few seconds. Their gentle personalities and easygoing behavior make them a popular choice for small farms and homesteads.

The breed dates back to the late 1800s, when it was first documented in Tennessee. Originally valued for their sturdy build and efficient meat production, fainting goats grew in popularity because they were calm, friendly, and easy to manage. Today, many people keep them for companionship, small-scale breeding, or simply because they enjoy their quirky charm.

Caring for fainting goats is pretty straightforward. They need good fencing, a dry shelter, quality hay, and access to clean water and minerals. Routine hoof trims and basic health checks go a long way in keeping them healthy. Like all goats, they’re herd animals, so keeping at least two ensures they feel secure and stay socially content.

Fainting goats also adapt well to different types of farms and family setups. They tend to stay put, follow a predictable routine, and get along with other livestock. Their calm nature and manageable size make them a practical and enjoyable addition to almost any small farm.
